Challenges in Treatment

The treatment of liquid oil waste from drilling and cleaning operations is often challenging. Whether the waste is oil slops, flowback, well washing or pit washings, the nature of the waste with solids, oil and water tied up in an emulsion makes the waste hard to treat.

In many situations attempts are made to treat this waste by using demulsifiers, which cause some water to be removed but creates a hard to treat thick sludge as an end product. Alternatively, this waste is mixed with drill cuttings and treated via some kind of thermal treatment system. This thermal approach is slow and obviously has a substantial carbon footprint.

The SAS MIST Process for Drill Cuttings Treatment

Reducing the oil on drill cuttings to below 1% is achieved through our MIST 344 process. This chemically enhanced cuttings wash system is able to process up to 50 ton per hour of OBM drill cuttings. Any liquid waste remaining is processed through a 19” decanter and through the SAS chemistry further dry solids are recovered.

The process is capable of treating drill cuttings to 0.5% - 3% Oil On Cuttings post treatment. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon content depends on the age of the cuttings and we can pr

The SAS Process - What Happens

In the SAS-ES process oil and water are recovered. The water is re-used in drilling, exploration, production or disposed of in an injection well. The solids are the only waste part and can often go to landfill without further stabilizing or treatment required. Based on projects from 2002 – 2019 waste reduction is on average 70% – 97%.

The SAS-ES process can include engineering equipment already in place, locally sourced equipment or our in-house developed MIST systems for slops treatment. It is the combination of the right engineering with our unique chemistry and our expertise of decades in drilling waste treatment and management that brings the value to our clients.

MIST 220 - Mud Waste Treatment

The MIST 220 is designed for drilling waste such as mud slops, mud waste or other liquid drilling waste. This mobile system can be supplied within a 20’ shipping container or as a skid based treatment process.

The SAS SludgeTreat chemistry is added ahead of the decanter and breaks the emulsion. This results in the recovery of dry solids and separate oil and water phases.

The liquid drilling waste system can process from 0.5 ton per hour up to 50 ton per hour.
